Creating Garment Patterns
There are different methods to creating patterns for garments. Patterns being the different pieces to a garment, such as front body, back body, collar, sleeve, cuff, etc. and in more complicated garments can be quite numerous, though if you know what you're going it won't be quite so confusing during assembly.

Above: Draping on a Dress form (remember that garments are worn by real people, so fittings should be according to wearer and not dress form)

Above: Using basic body blocks and manipulating for desired design effect (the center block is a basic bodice block, much different from a torso block that extends to the hipline, as you can see there are different ways to place the single waist dart and even more if one divides the dart into two or more, or sews it at gathers, pleats or dart tucks)
